Highlight of FIRE Industrial Members - Alfran
José María Domínguez, President of Grupo Aldomer: « We drive innovation in refractory engineering through applied knowledge and technical excellence»
At alfran, we are proud to contribute to FIRE - Federation for International Refractory Research & Education, a global initiative that connects industrial expertise with academic research to drive innovation in refractory world and high-temperature processes.
Our participation in FIRE is closely aligned with our technical capabilities and R&D strategy, particularly through ALFRAN Technical Institute, our know-how management programme focused on the world of Refractory Technology, both in the manufacture of materials and in its installation procedures.
Through this platform, we actively contribute to the development and validation of innovate refractory solutions.
A key pillar of our collaboration with FIRE is the integration of academic research into real industrial applications. By engaging with MSc and PhD students, ALFRAN fosters a bidirectional knowledge transfer, where theoretical models are validated in operational conditions, and industrial challenges inspire new research pathways.
As highlighted by our President, José María Domínguez Ibáñez: “Innovation in the refractory industry requires not only material development, but also a deep understanding of application, installation, and operational performance.”
At ALFRAN, we believe that initiatives like FIRE are essential to accelerate technological progress and deliver reliable, high-performance solutions to our clients worldwide, protecting the industry core.

Highlight of FIRE Alumni - Mathilda Derensy - Institute of Mineral Resources Engineering, RWTH Aachen University - Germany
My interest in refractories began during my engineering studies in ceramics at ENSCI Limoges, when I discovered that the refractory specialisation offered an international research experience through the FIRE program. I quickly realised that refractories are far more complex and fascinating than simple bricks.
Imerys & FIRE: Driving Innovation in Refractories Through Global Collaboration
I had the immense pleasure of being invited to talk about cooperative refractory research and education during the plenary session of the 20th China National Youth Academic Symposium on Refractories last May. The event took place in Yangzhou, China, and served as a perfect platform to promote the key mission of the Federation of International Refractory Research and Education (FIRE).
